OPENING CEREMONIES
President Mike Jennings called on Jody Moore to lead us in the National Anthem.

Fred Schiedel provided us with his own rendition for the invocation. This rendition touched on all the important parts of our lives, and the fact we are very thankful to be so lucky.

TABLE TALK
Lots of different conversation happened at our table, as all members had taken breaks over Christmas and had not seen each other for a few weeks.

Many folks described fun times with friends, family, as well as travel. A couple of individuals said it was very easy to travel due to the lack of snow and warm temperatures.

Some conversation also focused on the lack of snow until Christmas eve. The dusting of snow on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day made for a picturesque Christmas setting in Cambridge.

Other topics of interest at our table included Fred and Sean Carragher discussing the minimum snow needed to run their sleds.

Doug Cameron talked about his kids taking breaks from university and how it was nice to have them home. This thread led Dean Fitzgerald to comment to Doug that kids seem too young to enter university at 18. Dean feels that it is very hard for a person to know what they may like or not like at school when they are young. Then Doug mentioned he finished university and then attended teachers college. Then he was motivated to attend Chiropractic College, as being a teacher was just not a good fit. But being a Chiropractor is a good fit for him - and it took a winding road to get there.

Dean also mentioned it was fun to visit Disney in December. This fun involved long days of walking the theme parks at the House of the Mouse and meeting the characters with his kids.

Jeff Matyas said he will be off on another trip to Thailand. Safe travels Jeff!

Many folks also commented on how it will be fun to have a Christmas Party on February 1, due to the miscommunication from a few weeks back at The Pines.

SERGEANT-AT-ARMS REPORT

Fred reported that we had 23 of 23 members present for the meeting, and this represents 100% attendance. Fred complimented the group for this good start to the year.

David Cash also attended the meeting. David is a former Rotarian whom recently moved to Cambridge from Port Perry. He is contemplating joining Rotary in Cambridge, and is visiting the three clubs, to decide where he would like to join.

HAPPY-TOONIES
Mike Smith won the 50/50 draw. He took home $27. So, Mike was happy to win, and to be the guest speaker, for his Classification Talk.

Sean was happy, as he described a scenario of writing a cheque to Rotary, placing the cheque in an envelope, and then having a staff person at Winser Doors mail it. Then he collected the envelope and cheque with the other Rotary mail and delivered it to today's Board meeting. Sean said this is an example of exceptional team work.

David Mitten described how he took an excellent trip to Europe, to ski. By chance, Ken Denholm was also on this trip, and they had a memorable time.

Mike was happy he made it to Disney, and he had a really nice time with friends and family.

Doug Cameron did not get up to share but he told me that he was very happy to have enjoyed his family over the break.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
President Mike led the announcements off with reference to the new date for our canceled Christmas party. It will be at The Pines on 01 February. So, folks need to write a message to Mike, to confirm attendance ASAP.

Mike also reminded us the next meeting is a "tri-club event". This event will be held on Thursday January 17th at Galt Country Club.

Jody mentioned that he had some extra basketball tickets that he could provide to folks at the meeting. He said talk with him ASAP. Doug Cameron suggested that if someone was bored watching basketball, they could come down and watch him play hockey at the rink next door to the basketball court!

Jody also thanked everyone for another great year with the cakes and goodies. He said we totally sold out and would show a profit for the club.

Then Gerry Menezes announced another successful year of sold out the hams, again, in record time! He also said that more than 90% of the funds had been already collected. Gerry shared kudos with the club for the excellent efforts during 2018 and how this was the new standard for the future.

Mike mentioned that they were exploring the idea to have the 5th meeting of January (a rarity) held at Kingpin at the Cambridge Mall. More to follow. Stay tuned.

A key announcement from Mike was that Paul Witmer and David Mitten were designated Paul Harris Fellows by Rotary, due to their exemplary fund raising during the last year. Mike and the group congratulated them for their efforts!
GUEST SPEAKER

Mike and Peter Ashenhurst introduced our speaker today: Michael J Smith. This is Michael's Classification talk for Cambridge North Rotary.

To say the least, Michael provided a very informative and interesting talk. There is absolutely no way that this summary can represent all of the information that was shared. However, here is an overview.

Michael J Smith grew up in Sheffield and attended Glenview Park High School in Cambridge. After high school, he moved on to do an undergraduate degree in Leisure and Management with a double major in Business. After this successful foundation, he went on to complete a graduate degree in Management at University of Waterloo. He then worked for a number of governments, including Kitchener, Waterloo, Whitby, and Wainfleet. An interesting opportunity that lasted for about five years involved working as the Manager of the City of Thunder Bay. During this time, he also completed the requirements to be designated a Project Management Professional too.

The long dark winters up north eventually motivated him to migrate back south, and take another role with Waterloo. He was tapped to oversee the construction of the 500 acre RIM Park in Waterloo during the late 1990s. After RIM park was constructed, this tap continued to flow and Mike became the first Manager of RIM Park. He said it was really cool to start and finish the construction of the park and to then manage this great community infrastructure that benefits a wide variety of individuals.

Coming south also allowed him to spend more time with his family, especially his parents and two daughters: Erin and Erica. He also likes spending time with his varied friends, including Greg Rawn, whom suggested he join Rotary.

These days, Michael keeps busy with varied hats. He is extensively involved with a non-profit group in Mississauga and also operates his own management consulting company called MJStic Management Consulting.

If he was not busy enough, Michael is also doing a Masters of Business Administration in tandem with all of his other activities.

Michael also shared that his favourite band is U2, and he has attended at least 20 concerts over the years. He likes to golf with friends, and has been a member of Galt Country Club since 2008.

Michael ended his talk by explaining that it is time to contribute to the community and he feels this is an important undertaking to fit in to his life.

I suspect I can speak for the club, and write today to say we are very happy to have Michael join Cambridge North Rotary.

The meeting was then adjourned, on time. Not really surprising actually, given Michael's past experience with project management.

Wildlife Pictures of the Week

Two views of two Northern Leopard Frog (Lithobates pipiens). This frog species often will occur in wetlands as well as residential back yards.  The younger specimens stay close to water while the older specimens will travel variable distances to hunt for prey such as insects. Due to this habitat flexibility, the species is relatively abundant and not at risk. Another interesting detail is that the brown morphotype (left view) apparently represents less than 20% of most populations while the green morphotype (right view) dominates in southern Ontario. So, when you come across a Northern Leopard Frog again, try to see if it represents the brown or green morphotype.
