GUEST SPEAKER

Our guest speaker today was the lovely Kelly-Sue Oberle executive director of Food4Kids Waterloo Wellington.

The charitable organization provides food to children on the weekends, when they can't rely on school nutrition programs for meals.

The program started small in January 2017 and grew quickly. It now serves 520 children across Waterloo Region.

"You also see the number you can't accept. That's the hard part," Oberle said. "It pretty much comes down to funding."

Many of the 25 schools the charity supports have waiting lists, and more schools are eager to join. Upward of 2,500 children in the region are considered food insecure.

But Food4Kids has to slow its growth for now because it's a struggle to secure enough donations to keep feeding the children currently in the program. Food for one child costs about $1,000 a year.

"Just focus on one child," said executive director Kelly-Sue Oberle. "Kids should not have to worry about eating."

During the school year the deliveries are made to the schools and during the summer time

and March / Christmas break the volunteers deliver to the children's homes .

The child age 14 and under in need are provided   a bag with 16 - 20 nutritional items to put in their backpacks to take home.

The do have financial need as do all charitable organizations . But if you could sponsor one child that would go a long way.
