OPENING CEREMONIES

Today the three clubs in Cambridge met for another Tri-Club meeting. The host today was the Rotary Club of Preston-Hespeler.  Their opening ceremony was different from our club.   Their President Linda Breault allowed us to mingle for a few minutes then we got our meals from the buffet . The formal part of the meeting started after we finished our meal.

GUEST SPEAKER
President Linda Breault introduced our Guest Speaker.

As a Rawandan-born first generation immigrant in Canada, Marie-Paule Attema is passionate about promoting peace locally as well as globally. In the last 10 years, Marie-Paule has worked with the most marginalized and isolated populations in South Africa, Guatemala, Australia and Canada.

After completing the Masters of Social Work from Wilfred Laurier University in 2012, Marie-Paule began to work with the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), a non-profit organization that focuses on relief, development and peace. Her role focused on restorative justice issues for men returning to community after incarceration. While in this role, she provided trauma, correctional, mediation, and addictions services. In her last position with MCC, Marie-Paule worked to eliminate persistent homelessness in the Canadian context by supporting men and women as they transition from homelessness to stable housing.

In 2012, Marie-Paule joined the board of directors for Peaceworks, a non-profit organization that specializes in peace education for youth. Marie-Paule is currently pursuing a Masters of Peace and Conflict Studies as a Rotary Peace Fellow at University of Queensland, Australia. During her time in Australia, she has committed to working alongside Indigenous and Torres Strait Islanders towards social inclusion.

Marie-Paule Attema then treated us to a very thought provoking and inspiring talk. Her talk was originally going to be on her work on the Mennonite Central Committee however she decided to spend some time on the isolation that so many people live with. Isolation in this world is not always related to poverty or homelessness. As a 1994 Rawanda genocide survivor she has come to the realization that she should not be asking the question why me but rather why not me.  Marie has just completed her Masters of Peace and Conflict Studies in Queensland Australia.

After numereous questions for Marie-Paule President Linda gonged us back to work.
