OPENING CEREMONIES
New President Laureen confidently strode to the podium and struck the gavel immediately sending the members scurrying to their selected tables. It is amazing how quickly these new Presidents develop their confidence. With a little less confidence I looked around the room hoping to see the appointed editor for today's bulletin but alas my hope was quickly dashed, get pencil and paper and start taking notes. If you find this episode a bit disorganized remember I was still looking around hoping that someone would arrive and say, Hi Allan put your pen away, I will write the bulletin.
Dave Kinder invocated and Jody in his usual role led us in O Canada.

TABLE TALK
Today the Guest Speaker's topic was cannabis and on each table there sat 2 plates with 6 delicious looking brownies on each plate. We all watched the brownies and kept asking each other, did the Guest Speaker bring samples for today's talk ? Should we start eating the brownies? Did anyone see him put the brownies on the table? After a few adventurous members sampled the brownies and announced that they were delicious others followed.

There was also a lot of discussion on the TV show The Big Bang Theory. Quite a few of our members seem to enjoy this show but some were disappointed in the finale.

It was also announced that Paul Witmer will be growing cannabis commercially.

HAPPY-TOONIES

Dean Fitzgerald was again made a little happier today. It seems that this is becoming a weekly event for Dean and the rest of us.

Jody Moore was happy, he and his wife put their house up for sale and it was sold in a few days. They will be moving on the 16th of next month. We were happy to know that they would not be staying at the Bridges  in downtown Galt.

Larry Olney was happy, he and Anita were travelling on the 407 when they developed  a flat tire. By the time they pulled over the tire was totally destroyed, They called CAA and were lucky enough to get the only available tire in the entire area. Within 2 hours they were on their way.

Our President then informed us that she was the one that left the brownies on the table. She then expressed her amazement that we ate the brownies without knowing who placed them on the table. I think this Rotary year will be very interesting.

GUEST SPEAKER

Peter Ashenhurst introduced our Guest Speaker for today. Dr Youban Zeng is a Professor at the University of Guelph in the Horticultural Department. Dr Zeng has and continues to do research on the growing of cannabis and the industry in Ontario.

Dr. Zeng started by telling us that we should use the term cannabis rather than marijuana.
He hoped that after the lecture we should be able to answer these 3 questions. What is cannabis ? How is it produced and how do you grow your own ?
Before 2013 cannabis was grown by a few people on a small scale now it is being commercially grown. The cannabis plant is normally a tropical plant.  They are over 500 identified compounds that can be found in the plant.  These compounds can be broken down into THC which is responsible for the psychoactive properties and CBD which has many medicinal effects. CBD is usually produced as an oil and used for many health concerns. There are many anecdotal reports on the success of CBD oil on epilepsy.  The flower has a much higher concentration of these compounds than the leaf.

Farmers can expect a profit of $150.00 per sq meter when growing tomatoes, cannabis will yield a profit of $8000.00 per sq meter.
At the end of his talk the consensus was that he certainly answered the questions he posed at the start of his talk.

Paul Witmer thanked Dr Zeng for his very well received talk.

President Laureen gonged us back to work  and reminded us again, we will be getting together at the Galt Country Club Wednesday for a meeting of fellowship, join us if you can.
